You will spend your first night in the 3-star Rembrandt Hotel, perfectly located to check out all the newest pop-up restaurants, beer halls, coffee hangouts and pubs of Bucharest. Bucharest is a surprising city with funky bars abundant throughout its streets. Unique design features; platforms for cultural performance and art; sophisticated wineries and wild punk dives, all coalesce here.
On day two, leave Bucharest with a private minibus to start your journey in Transylvania. After almost 3 hours hop off at the prestigious wine cellars in Azuga for a sparkling wine tasting tour, then head to Bran where you can explore the legendary ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Your journey continues to Brasov where you have lunch (included) and discover the story behind the walls of the old town. Baroque facades, bohemian coffees, outdoor terraces and one of Europe’s narrowest streets make this medieval town a joy to wander around. In late afternoon you will enjoy one of the most exciting Carpathian experiences, a wild brown bear watching tour near Odorheiu Secuiesc. Bilingual and experienced rangers will take you in groups of max. 3 persons to one of the many wildlife hides located at the foothills of the Harghita Mountains. The bears usually come to the feeder 1-2 hours before sunset to eat. Spend the night in the stylish Three Bear Cubs Pension located in one of Romania’s most scattered villages, in Varsag. Transfer distance: 335 km (5-6 h)
This day is dedicated for those seeking memorable adventures off the beaten path! Ride 1 hour to Gheorgheni where the guides and 4×4 vehicles will be waiting for you to set off on your full day safari tour in the Eastern Carpathians. First stop will be in the dramatic Bicaz Gorges where 300m high limestone walls arise above the winding road. Here a 1.5 – 2 hour hiking can take you to the top of the Kiscohard Massif offering great views of Red Lake and of the surrounding mountains. The brave ones and who lack the smallest signs of dizziness, can challenge themselves on the newest via ferrata climbing route. Continue your journey along the picturesque Bicajel Valley with wooden houses, haystacks and dense forests until you reach the isolated village of Haromkut. Here you can witness traditional ways of living specific to many remote Carpathian settlements and have lunch at a local guesthouse or picknick in nature on the trail. Your 4×4 experience continues on remote forrest routes. At the border of the national park you may hike up to the 1706 m high Ecem Mountains. At the end of the day you can relax and spend the night in the exquisite Grand Hotel Balvanyos & SPA. Transfer distance: 216 km (6- 7 h)
This day is dedicated to the road that leads to the sky, the spectacular Transfagarasan high altitude road . In September 2009, the crew “ Top Gear” filmed and tested this road and Jeremy Clarkson had said that it “is the best road (driving road) in the world”. But Transfagarasan hides so much behind the amazing driving experience. The road inside the clouds uncovers breathtaking hikes, unique attractions and a history that has much to do with the communist regime. After the long road up, you can relax at 2034 m altitude at the cozy Balea Lake Chalet where we have lunch (included). Then we say farewell to the Carpathian Mountains and head to Bucharest. First we go through a long tunnel then we pass by beautiful waterfalls and spectacular mountain landscape. Along the way we optionally stop at Vidraru Dam, at Poienari Fortress and at Curtea de Arges, the former capital of Wallachia. You can spend the final night amongst Bucharest’s buzzing bars and restaurants. Transfer distance: 450 km (7-8 h)
