Description

Please join us for a full-day walk through the beautiful countryside of Hampshire and let yourself be inspired by amazing surroundings that once inspired Jane Austen to write her famous novels. Follow in her footsteps and try to discover with your own eyes the magic that sparked off the classics such as  Pride and Prejudice, Emma or Sense and Sensibility.

Meeting place: Clapham Junction Station, you will meet  Aaron at the main entrance (St John’s hill side, the one with Sainsbury’s), by the ticket offices. Look out for a black balloon with the group’s logo! 🙂

Meeting time: 08.45 am

Please note that we will be taking 09.11 am train from Clapham Junction, so we will wait at the meeting point until 9 am.

At 9 am sharp we will make our way to the platform, so please make sure that you arrive on time as we will not be waiting for the late comers. You will be welcome to try and catch up with the group afterwards.  We will arrive at Alton at 10:45 am. It is very difficult to predict exact return time as it depends on the walking speed of the particular group and the choices we make along the way (lunch route etc). If you decide to join, please consider yourself committed for the day.

Jane Austen was born in Hampshire and it is there that she lived most of her life. Tourists tend to associate Austen with the Bath, a bustling city in Somerset, but she did most of her writing in Chawton, the main destination of the walk we would like to offer you, where she settled in 1809 with her mother and sister. Her quiet life there came after some disruptive wilderness years spent in Bath and Southampton and allowed for a burst of creativity that saw the publication of four major novels. Here you will be able to explore breathtaking fields and country lanes where she walked and visit her home at the Jane Austen’s House Museum where visitors can walk through the rooms she lived and worked, and view many relics of her family.

Distance and difficulty:

The entire walk will be 8.2 miles, there is one small hill at about 3 1/2 miles but it isn’t very big.

We will have 2 miles from the station to Chawton and then a 4.5 mile walk in the countryside before lunch in Chawton and sightseeing at the Jane Austin house.

Lunch: We will be stopping for lunch (not included) in Chawton in Cassandras Cup around 1:00 pm. You can find the menu here: http://www.cassandrascup.co.uk/cc-content/uploads/2016/02/CassandrasCup-Spring-Summer-menu-2017.pdf

After the lunch, we will leave Chawton and direct to Farringdon, a small, scenic village in Hampshire where Austen would come to visit her friends and acquaintances and where we will visit 12th century All Saint Church famous for its stained window and churchyard that contains yew trees reputed to be of great antiquity. Estimates have suggested that the trees may be as much as 2,000 years old. The trip will come to its end around in Alton where Jane would go to visit and shop while she lived at Chawton.

Please give yourself enough time to find the meeting point – it is quite a large station and has many entrances, please check the TFL journey planner for any planned engineering works and please allow enough time for any unplanned disruptions to your journey. If you are late and miss the group no refunds will be provided and there will be no use calling us and asking us to wait as I’m afraid I will not be keeping 30 people, who made it on time, waiting for one late comer.

As it gets quite hectic when everyone starts arriving and looking for the meeting point, please don’t email me or leave a voice mail as I will not have time to check it until after the walk.

BAD WEATHER: With all the crazy stuff happening with the weather recently, please note that we may be prevented from doing some of activities due to unpredictable weather events. If this is the case replacement activities will be offered.
