Itinerary (subject of change)

Day 1 (Sunday)

Our first day is a relaxed introduction to Albania. We’ll meet you at Podgorica Airport and then transfer by minibus across the border to the northern Albanian city of Shkodër, arriving at around 12.30. After checking into our central hotel, we’ll head to a restaurant on the shore of Lake Skadar, and enjoy a welcome meal of krap (lake carp). After lunch, we’ll explore the city, including a visit to famous Rozafa Castle, which dominates the skyline. Evening at your leisure.

Overnight in Shkodër.

Meals: Lunch.

Day 2 (Monday)

After an early start, we’ll make the short transfer to the village of Boga at 07.30, arriving around 8.30. Then we’ll begin our first days walking up and over the Boga Pass to the village of Theth, hidden in a deep mountain valley. It’s a challenging day, with a steep climb and descent on sometimes loose rocks. We should arrive at our simple guest house with en suite rooms around 17.00. After a well earned beer, we’ll eat a substantial meal of traditional northern Albanian Gheg cuisine, cooked by the guest house owner’s mother. Overnight in Theth.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3 (Tuesday)

An easier day, we’ll explore the village of Theth on foot, including a walk to the famous Blue Eye spring. The valley is a magical place, with waterfalls galore and a traditional siege tower. Blood feuds used to be an endemic problem in these mountains, until the practice was (mostly) stamped out by the Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. In the evening we’ll return to our guest house and enjoy another hearty meal (the food here is really good!). Overnight in Theth. Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner.

Day 4 (Wednesday)

Another challenging day. Our destination is the village of Valbona but there’s a spectacular mountain range in our path! We should reach Valbona by around 15.30, and then walk on an extra 45 minutes to our en suite guest house. There are several restaurants in Valbona, but we recommend the one owned by the guest house owners. It’s so good that booking is recommended! Overnight in Valbona.

Meals: Breakfast and Picnic Lunch.

Day 5 (Thursday)

After the previous days exertions, we’ll have a more relaxed day walking in and around Valbona. The valley is threatened by hydropower projects, so this year represents one of the last opportunities to see it in its virgin state. Overnight in Valbona.

Meals: Breakfast and Picnic Lunch.

Day 6 (Friday)

Today, we will cross the border into Kosovo, passing through Tropojë, the region made famous as a hotbed of Albanian mafia activity by Liam Neeson’s Taken movies (although the reality is a café and a couple of cows). After we cross the border, we stop for lunch at the UNESCO listed Serbian Orthodox monastery of Decani, before driving on the short distance to the charming Ottoman town of Gjakova. After checking into our hotel, we’ll explore the atmospheric centre on foot, before having a beer in one of the bars in the bazaar. Evening at your leisure. Overnight in Gjakova.

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 7 (Saturday)

We’ll make a civilised start to the day, and cross back into Albania to catch the Lake Koman ferry. This journey, along the damned river Drin, is rated as one of the best inland ferry journeys in the world - the scenery is just mindblowing! On arrival at Koman at around 16.00, we’ll transfer by minibus to Shkodër, where we’ll enjoy a farewell meal at our hotel’s excellent restaurant before hitting the town. Overnight in Shkodër.

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Farewell Dinner.

Day 8 (Sunday)

– Breakfast (included)

– Morning transfer to Podgorica
